Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard Remembers His Oath of Office & Now Tells Feds He Will Defend Arizona's Immigration Law if U.S. Sues to Overturn It

Here is today’s multiple choice question.  After refusing to defend Arizona’s immigration law from numerous lawsuits that seek to overturn the law, why did Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard warn tell the U.S. Justice Department today that if the U.S. sues to overturn Arizona’s immigration law, he will defend it:

  1. He believes in duty, honor & country.
  2. He reread his oath of office that says, “I do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the State of Arizona, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and defend them against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office of Attorney General according to the best of my ability, so help me God.”
  3. His opposition to Arizona’s immigration law that is supported by a large majority of Arizonans is causing his poll numbers for Governor to drop while his prospective opponent’s poll numbers sky-rocket.
  4. He and his cracker-jack team of U.S. constitutional lawyers have re-reviewed the law after discovering that twenty states and many constitutional scholars believe the law is unconstitutional.  Oops, never mind.  I was confused for a minute there about another job representing Arizona in court that the Arizona AG refused to do.  Terry still refuses to represent Arizona in overturning Obamacare.  See “Arizona Attorney General Won’t Challenge Obamacare.”
  5. Now that he successfully sued to get rich white women into the men’s grill at Phoenix Country Club he is looking for another big case to add to his resume.  See the Settlement Agreement.
  6. The Arizona legislature passed House Bill 2162 signed into law by Governor Brewer, which law orders the Attorney General to do his job and defend Arizona’s immigration law.
  7. All of the above.
